A very busy birthday week on RadioClassics (heck the entire month of May is crammed with radio star’s birthdays)!
We celebrate the birthdays of two different actors who played The Shadow on radio; Bret Morrison and Orson Welles. Not only will Welles featured in that role but also on the following series; The Black Museum, The Third Man, Suspense, fill-in hosting The Jack Benny Program and Mercury Theater On The Air’s version of “The Count Of Monte Cristo.”
We also have birthday specials for Eve Arden (Our Miss Brooks and The Danny Kaye Show); Bing Crosby; Mary Astor (Campbell Playhouse’s “Hurricane”); big screen leading man Glenn Ford (Suspense as well as Studio One’s version of the thriller “The 39 Steps” the same book was also made into 1935 Alfred Hitchcock directed motion picture); British film star Brian Aherne; Alice Faye (Phil Harris & Alice Faye Show); Ben Wright (Pursuit, Suspense); Tyrone Power (guest on The Jack Benny Program); Frank Nelson (Jeff Regan, Investigator); Dan O’Herlihy; Rosemary Rice; James Nusser (Gunsmoke, Wild Bill Hickok) and legendary radio writer/director Norman Corwin.
We also celebrate the 85th anniversary of Jack Benny’s radio debut with a First and Finale Special plus mark this week’s Kentucky Derby with a two-hour horse themed block featuring episodes from The Jack Benny Program, Duffy’s Tavern, Boston Blackie, Gangbusters).
