The headline this week is easy – Olivia de Havilland’s 103rd – How about that?! We have the Oscar winning actress in two episodes of The Academy Award Theater as well as Suspense plus as the special guest on The Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy Show.
Speaking of Oscar winners: we also celebrate Charles Laughton as the British acting legend is featured in a couple of Suspense plus stops by Duffy’s Tavern as well as The Abbott and Costello Show.
Other birthday blocks for: Bill Stern (Colgate Sports Newsreel); Gloria Stuart (Suspense); Marie McDonald (guest on Duffy’s Tavern, Colgate Sports Newsreel); opera singer Dorothy Kirsten (guest on Bergen & McCarthy Show) and WXYZ station owner George W. Trendle (The Green Hornet).
We mark some series debut anniversaries: Blondie (80th); The Aldrich Family (80th); Abbott and Costello (79th); Judy Canova Show (76th); Casey Crime Photographer (76th); Philo Vance (74th); Escape (72nd) and The Line-Up (69th).
Independence Day Specials (and for my Canadian listeners, Happy July 1st – Canada Day!)
As is our usual tradition we have a All-American Superhero Man Of Steel Marathon. This year a special treat, as it’s a 4-hour special featuring a new to the channel storyline. The Mystery Of The Dead Voice originally played out in the Spring of 1946 and finds Superman joined by Batman and Robin.
We also have some traditional patriotic fare from Norman Corwin and James Cagney (Yankee Doodle Dandy), we also have a couple Revolutionary War stories from the NBC series Inheritance plus The CBS Radio Workshop’s audio tribute to the USA known as “Sounds Of A Nation”.
