The Wizard Of Oz first came to theatre’s 80 years ago (national theatrical release August 25th, 1939) and to celebrate that, I am bringing back Lux Radio Theatre’s 1950 adaptation of that famed family fantasy/musical film. Judy Garland returns in the role of Dorothy with some top radio voices as The Scarecrow (Hans Conried), The Tim Man (Herb Vigran), and The Cowardly Lion (Ed Max).
We have two different Ray Bradbury birthday specials (including productions of “Zero Hour”, “Kaleidoscope” “The Screaming Woman” and “Dwellers In Silence”); plus we mark the 60th anniversary of the 50th State entering the Union (with Hawaiian themed episodes of The CBS Radio Workshop’s, The Jack Benny Program, Duffy’s Tavern).
In addition to Bradbury, other birthday week long tributes include Van Johnson (Suspense); Gene Kelly (Screen Guild Players “For Me and My Gal” and two from Suspense); Marie Wilson (My Friend Irma); Alan Reed (Pascuale on Life With Luigi, roles on Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe); Lesley Woods (Inner Sanctum Mysteries, Mary on Boston Blackie); Jay Novello (Captain Sabaaya on Rocky Jordan); Jack McCarthy (The Green Hornet) and announcer Ken Carpenter (Bing Crosby Show, The Life Of Riley, The Great Gildersleeve).
And finally there is a series debut anniversary special for Father Knows Best featuring back to back episodes of that family sitcom which debuted on radio 70 years ago.
