This week kicks of Monday with a whole day of Memorial Day tributes including the following:
Norman Corwin’s On A Note of Triumph V-E Day Celebration which once again includes my past visits with both Corwin and radio actor and WWII vet, Cliff Carpenter as well as war themed episodes of America At War; Suspense, The CBS Radio Workshop, Cavalcade Of America plus radio adaptations of the following war pictures; “Wake Island”, “The Navy Comes Through” and “Salute To The Marines”.
We’ll have two different birthday specials for Vincent Price. One of them features two episodes of The Saint; Escape’s “Three Skeleton Key” plus some of my past visit with his son, V. Barrett Price and his daughter, Victoria Price. The other special finds Price in three Suspense productions as well as Yours Truly Johnny Dollar’s “The Price Of Fame Matter.”
Quite a busy week for radio legend birthdays as we also celebrate both Bob Hope (Bob Hope Show, Cavalcade Of America, Suspense) and Fred Allen (Fred Allen Show, Family Theatre, Screen Director’s Playhouse).
Others birthday specials include John Wayne (Lux Radio Theatre’s “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon”, Screen Director’s “Stagecoach”); Stacy Keach, Sr (director of Tales Of The Texas Rangers); cartoon voice wiz Mel Blanc (The Mel Blanc Show, Jack Benny Program, Judy Canova Show); Don Ameche (Chase & Sanborn Hour, The Bickersons); and author Dashiell Hammett (Sam Spade, The Fat Man).
As well as Sam Edwards (Mutual Radio Theatre, Crime Classics, Fort Laramie); Ben Alexander (Dragnet, The Great Gildersleeve, Martin & Lewis Show); Jeanne Bates (The Whistler); Paul Lukas (Suspense’s “World Of Darkness”); Al Jolson (Kraft Music Hall); plus singers/actresses Ginny Simms and Peggy Lee (a centennial celebration!).
