This year’s annual Halloween Week debuts on Monday October 26th and continues through Halloween Weekend.
On to this week’s highlights:
Topping the series anniversary specials is a tribute to Sherlock Holmes. The Arthur Conan Doyle character debuted on radio 90 years ago on October 20th, 1930, and we celebrate him with a two-hour four episode special featuring four different acting tandems as Holmes & Watson.
We also mark the 91st anniversary of Rudy Vallee’s radio debut plus specials for Fred Allen’s 88th anniversary, Big Town’s 83rd and Pursuit’s 71st.
A centennial celebration for British radio producer Harry Alan Towers featuring episodes of his series; The Black Museum, The Third Man, Sherlock Holmes (with Sir John Gielgud & Sir Ralph Richardson).
Additional birthday tributes for
Oscar winner Joan Fontaine 1917-2013 (Screen Director’s Playhouse’s “Ivy”, Suspense) Barney Phillips (Dragnet, Escape, Gunsmoke); Bela Lugosi (Suspense, Abbott & Costello), Laurette Fillbrandt (The Whistler); Parker Fennelly (Titus Moody on Fred Allen Show); and Hy Averback (Suspense, The Whistler, Bob Hope Show).
Plus we offer up early birthday tributes (bumped due to Halloween Week) for Joan Banks (The Whistler, My Friend Irma); Elsa Lanchester (Lux Radio Theatre, Columbia Workshop); and Fanny Brice (Baby Snooks).
We celebrate Major League Baseball’s World Series with radio appearances from some Hall Of Fame players including Joe DiMaggio (on The Eddie Cantor Show), Dizzy Dean & Jackie Robinson (on The Bob Hope Show) and Hank Greenberg (on Bing Crosby’s Philco Radio Time). Plus we have William Bendix as Babe Ruth and World Series themed episodes from both The Jack Benny Program and The Adventures Of Ellery Queen.
