Plenty of birthday specials this week, but first let’s talk about a series debut anniversary.
Father Know Best first came to radio 73 years ago on August 25th, 1949 (moved to television on October 3rd, 1954). We celebrate it’s anniversary with an hour of episodes which also functions as a birthday tribute for actress June Whitley (Aug 26th, 1921 – May 5th, 2006).
We also have a special marking the anniversary of the nationwide theatrical release of “The Wizard Of Oz” (August 25th, 1939). We bring back the hour-long Lux Radio Theatre 1950 adaptation with Judy Garland back as Dorothy.
As to those birthdays? We celebrate movie stars, radio performers and legendary authors.
We have a double tribute for science fiction author Ray Bradbury. Two different two-hour blocks featuring some of his best-known works as presented on Dimension X, X Minus One and Suspense (“Marionette’s INC”, “Zero Hour”, “Kaleidoscope” “The Screaming Woman” and “Dwellers In Silence”).
Plus birthday tributes for the following movie stars: Gene Kelly (Two from Suspense, Guest on Frank Sinatra Show); Charles Boyer (Cavalcade Of America, Screen Director’s Playhouse); and Van Johnson (Suspense, Jimmy Durante Show).
And for these radio actors: Larry Thor (Broadway Is My Beat, Suspense, Escape); Lesley Woods (Inner Sanctum Mysteries, Mary on Boston Blackie); Jay Novello (Captain Sabaaya on Rocky Jordan); Anne Whitfield (Harris & Faye Show); Jack McCarthy (The Green Hornet); bandleader Bob Crosby (Jack Benny Program); Bobby Ellis (The Aldrich Family); and singer/dancer Peggy Ryan (guest on The Bob Hope Show).
